7 Critical Mistakes You Must Avoid When Self Publishing – Part 2

7 Critical Mistakes You Must Avoid When Self Publishing – Part 2
03/07/2013

In the previous post we started to cover some typical mistakes that a lot of self publishers make in their way to become successful authors. Here are a few more critical mistakes you should take into consideration and avoid doing:

Mistake #4: Using Templates or Text Boxes.

Many writers resort to these page elements to make their writing process a bit easier, but templates and text boxes can both play havoc with digital publishing platforms. Once a finished book is submitted, unintended results can include extra blank pages and odd paragraph spacing or word-wrapping.

Mistake #5: Not Hiring a Freelance Editor.

Unlike proofreading strictly for grammatical correctness, editing involves checking for flow of logic, lack of clarity or use of cliché phrases in the copy. Many writers fail to catch these weaknesses in their own writing, and hiring an experienced editor for this job will result in stronger final written copy.

Mistake #6: Lack of a Book Marketing Plan.

Self-publishing writers also become publishers who need to generate interest in their finished product. Placing a book for sale on a web page will not generate much success without a solid marketing plan, including a target audience and methods of promoting the book to them.

Mistake #7: Not Allocating Overhead Funds.

Quality self-publishing is not entirely free, contrary to some misconceptions. Spending some upfront money on editing, cover design and marketing campaigns is essential to a professional end product. Unlike many overhead costs in traditional print publishing, cover designers and book editors can be hired through online services for reasonable fees.
To self-publish a successful book that buyers want to read, authors need to produce compelling, well-written copy about topics familiar to them. They also need to assume the role of publisher in terms of identifying a book’s target audience and marketing to them. Spending some time learning these self-publishing steps will noticeably increase a finished book’s chances of selling well and standing out from competitors.
